the Eight Great Hutongs
The Eight Great Hutongs used to be synonymous with the red-light districts. They are located in the area north of Xizhushikou Street and south of Tieshuxie Street.
Eight hutongs with their own characteristics and well-known reputations are distributed in this area. They are Baishun Hutong, Yanzhi Hutong, Hanjiatan, Shaanxi Xiang, Shitou Hutong, Wangguangfu Xie Street, Zhuji Hutong and Lishamao Hutong. In the past years, this place carried numerous stories and witnessed the social features and all aspects of life in that specific historical period.
Nowadays, with the passage of time, the Eight Great Hutongs have long shed their former colors and have been transformed into places where ordinary people live. Although they have gone through a long period of baptism and many changes, when we stroll around here, we can still vaguely feel the unique charm of those years from the architectural styles, exterior appearances and some details of the remaining old houses and buildings. It's as if we are traveling through the time tunnel to peek into the past that has already gone away but left a deep impression, and to appreciate the traces left by the years and the context of the urban development and changes.
